Shimmering Opportunities: Sovereign Gold Bonds

Are you looking for a hassle-free way to invest in gold? Check out this blog about Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs), a scheme by the GOI and the RBI. SGBs let you own gold in 'certificate' format, earning interest and tax benefits. But they also have drawbacks, such as limited liquidity, market risks, and eligibility criteria. Plus, you don't get to see or touch your gold. How boring is that?

Here are some facts about SGBs:

• Interest rate: 2.5% per annum, paid semi-annually.

• Taxation: Interest income taxable, capital gains exempted at maturity.

• Returns: Linked to market price of gold at redemption or maturity.

• Maturity: 8 years, lock-in of 5 years.

• Trading: On stock exchanges within a fortnight of issuance.

• Next series: March 1 to March 5, 2024.

• Application: Through banks, post offices, stock exchanges or online platforms.
